On September 9, a man driving a Ford Mustang going roughly 70 to 80 miles per hour on Homestead Passcrashed into the flatbed trailer of a semi-truck. The man, who was seriously injured and died several days after the accident, may have fallen asleep at the wheel, which would explain his speed and why he did not stop before hitting the trailer.

According to statistics from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of every 25 adult drivers admits to falling asleep while driving within the last 75 days. The actual numbers might be even higher since people who doze off for only a second or two often do not realize they have fallen asleep. Luckily, there are several things you can do to avoid falling asleep at the wheel.

One of the most important ways to avoid falling asleep while driving is to get enough sleep. Adults generally need at least seven hours of sleep every day. Teens should get at least eight hours of sleep. If you struggle with sleep problems or if you snore, talk to a doctor about treatment for the issue.

If you are feeling tired, avoid driving. If you know you are likely to feel too tired to safely drive, plan ahead, especially if you will have to drive a considerable distance. For example, if you are returning from a long business trip, have a family member pick you up from the airport, take a taxi, or book a hotel near the airport for the night.

People often get tired on longer trips. When taking a longer trip, leave with more than enough time to safely get to your destination. That way, if you do start to feel tired, you will not feel so pressured into continuing to drive to get to your destination on time. If you do start to feel tired, pull over. Take a nap at a rest stop, get out of your vehicle and walk around for a few minutes, or switch drivers when you first start feeling tired. It is a good idea to take frequent breaks when taking longer trips, even if you do not feel tired.
